Opera Camerata of Washington -- in this newest manifestation, states that it remains devoted to presenting rare works. Under new director Gregory Buchalter "Opera Camerata has specialized in presenting neglected works of important composers. While this is important for the education of our musical public, I would like to incorporate such obscure works with some of the more standard repertoire." Whether or not performing Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri, constituting the sum total of its 2002 season, is a fulfillment of that goal is a matter of debate. We opine the worst:-- Opera Camerata will now either present the same repertory as every other American opera company, mixing in such popular works as La Boheme with the extremely obscure, or not bother presenting the obscure at all. Look for a de-emphasis on Donizetti, Meyerbeer and the bel canto era. A great disappointment in the making.
